Hormesis is a biphasic response of the body to the dose of an exposure: small doses of stress bring benefit, while large ones are harmful or toxic. The classic example is physical exercise: a sedentary lifestyle is harmful, moderate training is beneficial, and excessive training raises the risk of injury and disease.

How hormesis works
The dose-response relationship in hormesis has a U-shaped (or inverted-U) form with three zones: deficiency (too little — harmful), the hormetic zone (a little — beneficial) and toxicity (too much — harmful). In the beneficial zone, mild stress triggers adaptive protective mechanisms — the cell "learns" to cope better with the load.
