Estimated biological age — a panel of blood tests and an age calculation

Estimated biological age is a practical assessment of biological age based on available biomarkers: blood pressure, blood counts, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and inflammation. Unlike complex epigenetic clocks, it can be calculated from the results of a routine check-up.

The result is compared with chronological age: if it is higher, the body is "aging" faster than average.

What estimated biological age shows

Biomarkers of aging are measurable features that predict future health better than the number of years lived. Estimated biological age combines several such markers into a single number. The difference between it and your calendar age is called age acceleration: a positive value means you are biologically older, a negative one — younger.

How it is calculated

The classic approach is regression on chronological age: a set of measures is taken (blood pressure, glucose or HbA1c, cholesterol, CRP, albumin, creatinine, sometimes forced expiratory volume) and a formula estimates the "age" of such a profile. One rigorous method is the Klemera–Doubal equation. More advanced models, such as PhenoAge or epigenetic clocks, use lab tests and DNA methylation.

How to read the result

Estimated biological age is a guide, not a verdict: it shows a trend and is well suited to tracking the effect of lifestyle. To understand whether you are aging fast, it is compared with your expected biological age and used to calculate the aging rate coefficient.

How does estimated biological age differ from epigenetic age?

The estimated one is calculated from ordinary clinical measures (blood, blood pressure) using a formula — it is accessible and cheap. Epigenetic clocks measure DNA methylation in a lab and are considered more accurate, but they are more expensive and less available.

How much can you trust a single number?

A single measurement gives only a rough guide. The value comes from repeated assessments: if your biological age rises more slowly than your calendar age over time, your health measures are working.
