Aging rate coefficient — a speedometer of the pace of aging

The aging rate coefficient (ARC) shows whether the body is aging faster or slower than average. In its classic form it is the ratio of your actual biological age to the expected one (the value anticipated for your years).

A value of about 1.0 means aging at an average pace; above 1 — accelerated; below 1 — slowed.

What the ARC shows

Unlike the age figure itself, the coefficient assesses the pace: how fast age-related changes accumulate. This is more convenient for comparing people of different ages — a young and an older person may have the same ARC but a different absolute biological age.

How it is calculated

The classic approach (the Voitenko method): ARC = actual biological age ÷ expected biological age. A modern counterpart is the "pace of aging": epigenetic clocks such as DunedinPACE estimate how many biological years pass in one calendar year. A value of 1.0 means a normal pace, 1.2 means aging about 20% faster.

How to read the result

An ARC above 1 (or a pace of aging above 1.0) is a signal to work on modifiable factors: diet, sleep, activity, and control of blood pressure and blood sugar. The measure is most useful over time: a falling ARC indicates that your measures are working. Remember: this is an estimate, not a precise diagnosis.

Is an ARC of 1.1 a lot?

Formally it means aging about 10% faster than average. A single measurement is only a guide; what matters more is the direction of change on repeated assessments and the overall set of risk factors.

How does the ARC differ from biological age?

Biological age is a static figure “as of now”, whereas the ARC reflects speed: how fast you are aging relative to the norm or relative to calendar time.
