The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is waist circumference divided by height in the same units. The measure reflects central obesity and its associated risk better than BMI, because it accounts not only for belly size but also for body size.
The main advantage of WHtR is a simple universal rule: your waist should be less than half your height (WHtR < 0.5). It works for both sexes and most ethnic groups without separate tables.

What an elevated level means
A WHtR of 0.5 or above indicates an excess of visceral fat and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. A value ≥0.6 is a signal to "act": reduce the waist through diet and activity.
What a low level means
A WHtR in the 0.4–0.49 range is a healthy zone. Values below 0.4 may indicate a weight deficit and call for attention to nutrition, especially in older people and adolescents.
How the test is done
Formula: WHtR = waist circumference / height (both in centimeters). For example, a waist of 82 cm at a height of 170 cm gives 82/170 ≈ 0.48 — a healthy range. The waist is measured midway between the lower rib and the hip bone after a calm exhalation.
What affects the value
- Error in measuring the waist — the main source of inaccuracy.
- Very high muscle mass and height affect it less than they affect BMI, but extremes are worth considering.
- Pregnancy, bloating overstate the waist and the ratio.
