Telomerase is an enzyme that rebuilds telomeres — the protective "caps" on the ends of the chromosomes. With each cell division the telomeres shorten, and telomerase can partly restore them.
This makes it a key figure in the biology of aging: telomere shortening is one of the recognized hallmarks of aging, and telomerase counters it. It is linked to the Hayflick limit and cellular senescence.
How telomerase relates to aging
Most ordinary cells of the body make little telomerase, so their telomeres gradually shorten. When the telomeres become critically short, the cell stops dividing and enters senescence or triggers apoptosis. In this way telomere shortening works as a "counter" of divisions and contributes to the aging of tissues.
Telomerase is active mainly in stem cells, germ cells and, unfortunately, cancer cells — it is precisely the activation of telomerase that helps tumors divide endlessly. Herein lies the "duality": more telomerase means potentially slower cell aging, but also a higher cancer risk.
What affects the telomeres
You cannot directly "switch on" telomerase through lifestyle, but habits affect the rate at which telomeres shorten. It is accelerated by smoking, obesity, chronic stress and inflammation, and lack of sleep. It is slowed by regular physical activity, a balanced diet, stress management and good sleep.
This is not about telomeres "growing", but about spending them more sparingly — the same prevention that protects the heart and metabolism.
What is important to understand
Supplements and products promising to "activate telomerase" and "lengthen telomeres" have no proven benefit for human lifespan and are potentially unsafe (a cancer-related risk). Telomere length is an interesting marker, but one not yet ready for personal decisions.
The practical conclusion is dull but honest: telomeres are best influenced by basic healthy living, not by "rejuvenating" products.

Can telomeres be lengthened with supplements?
There is no convincing evidence of benefit for human health and longevity. "Telomerase activators" are sold, but their effectiveness is unproven, and artificially activating telomerase theoretically raises cancer risks. It is more reliable to influence telomeres through a healthy lifestyle.
Are short telomeres a death sentence?
No. Telomere length is just one of many markers of biological age, and it varies a great deal between people. It reflects the sum of stresses (stress, inflammation, habits) but does not predict any one person's fate.
Why is telomerase linked to cancer?
To divide endlessly, cancer cells need to restore their telomeres, and most tumors activate telomerase to do so. So products that "spur on" telomerase raise justified concern about cancer risk.
