Cellular senescence — a senescent “zombie cell” among healthy ones

Cellular senescence is a state in which a cell irreversibly stops dividing but does not die. Such cells are figuratively called “zombie cells”: they no longer work properly, yet they do not leave.

Originally this is a protective mechanism (for example, to keep a damaged cell from becoming cancerous). But with age, senescent cells accumulate and begin to do harm — this is one of the key hallmarks of aging. It is linked to telomeres and apoptosis.

Why “zombie cells” are harmful

Senescent cells release a cocktail of inflammatory signals — the so-called SASP (senescence-associated secretory phenotype). It sustains chronic low-grade inflammation (“inflammaging”), damages neighboring healthy cells and contributes to age-related diseases: atherosclerosis, diabetes, osteoarthritis, neurodegeneration.

So the problem is not a single stalled cell, but the fact that with age they become numerous and “poison” their surroundings.

Can it be influenced

The body itself clears some senescent cells through the immune system; with age it copes worse. Slowing their accumulation is helped by the same things that reduce inflammation: physical activity, a healthy diet, a normal weight, sleep, quitting smoking.

Senolytics — drugs that selectively remove “zombie cells” — are being actively studied. Animal results are encouraging, but in humans this is still an experimental field: efficacy and safety for longevity are not proven, and self-treatment is unacceptable.
