Subcutaneous fat is the fatty tissue lying directly under the skin. It is the main part of body fat: by various estimates it accounts for about 80–90% of all fat stores, while the rest is visceral fat around the organs.
Subcutaneous fat is not just "aesthetics": it serves as thermal insulation, an energy store and an endocrine organ. It is convenient to measure with calipers, and together with visceral fat it forms the total body fat percentage and body composition.
Subcutaneous and visceral fat: the difference
Although belly fat may look the same, different types lie under the skin and inside the abdomen. Subcutaneous fat is soft and can be grasped with the fingers; it is less active and, in moderate amounts, relatively safe. Visceral fat surrounds the internal organs, is hormonally active and is more strongly linked to diabetes and heart disease.
So the thickness of a skinfold alone cannot tell you the risk: waist circumference and signs of abdominal obesity, which reflect visceral fat, matter more.
Why it is needed and when it becomes a problem
A certain store of subcutaneous fat is necessary: it protects against cold and injury, stores energy and takes part in producing hormones (for example, leptin). Women normally have more of it than men — this is part of the gynoid distribution.
It becomes a problem in excess: it raises the total body fat percentage and is often accompanied by a rise in visceral fat. It is reduced the same way — a calorie deficit, movement and strength exercise that preserves muscle.

How the test is done
The classic method is caliper measurement: a special clamp (caliper) measures the thickness of skinfolds at several points, and body fat percentage is estimated from formulas. Ultrasound is more accurate, and to separate fat into subcutaneous and visceral, CT, MRI or bioimpedance is used.
What affects the value
- Caliper technique: the points and the skinfold grasp strongly affect the result.
- Edema and hydration distort bioimpedance.
- Skinfold thickness does not reflect visceral fat — assess the waist too.
