Essential fat

The minimum fat needed for vital functions

Diagram of essential and storage fat in the body with body-fat percentage benchmarks

Essential fat is the minimum amount of fat without which the body cannot function normally. It is part of cell membranes, nervous tissue, bone marrow and the membranes of internal organs, and it is needed for hormone production. Unlike storage (reserve) fat, essential fat cannot be "burned off" without harm to health.

Essential and storage fat

The entire body fat percentage is divided into two parts. Essential fat is structural and functional — it is in the organs, nerves and membranes. Storage (reserve) fat is the fat mass in the depots: subcutaneous fat and the more dangerous visceral fat around the organs. It is the storage fat that is reduced during weight loss; the essential fat must not be touched.

Why women have more of it

Women physiologically need more essential fat than men — because of sexual and reproductive functions (breasts, hips, hormonal regulation). So the minimum for women is about 10–13%, and for men about 2–5%. Too low a body fat in women leads to hormonal disruption and cessation of menstruation.

Body-fat percentage benchmarks

Below is the popular classification of the American Council on Exercise (ACE). These are benchmarks for health and shape, not rigid norms: they are read together with body composition, where lean body mass also matters.

Reference ranges

Body-fat percentage categories (ACE) — men / women:

Essential2–5% / 10–13%
Athletes6–13% / 14–20%
Fitness14–17% / 21–24%
Average18–24% / 25–31%
Obesity≥ 25% / ≥ 32%
Important: Keeping fat at the essential minimum for a long time is dangerous: sex hormones drop, bones and immunity suffer, and in women the cycle stops. Bioimpedance and DEXA help estimate your body-fat percentage.

Frequently asked questions

Can body fat be lowered to 3–4%?

Such a level is acceptable only briefly (for example, in bodybuilders before a competition) and is dangerous if held long-term: hormones, immunity and the heart suffer. In women the minimum is higher — about 10–13%.

Is essential fat the same as subcutaneous fat?

No. Essential fat is structural: it is in the organs, nervous tissue and membranes. Subcutaneous and visceral fat are storage depots that can be reduced without harm.
