Mental age

The age of your mind: psychological and emotional maturity

A radar chart as a metaphor for a dynamic mental profile

Mental age is a concept with two meanings. Historically it is a measure introduced by Alfred Binet: how far a person's intellectual results match the average level for their age. In the modern sense it is more of a dynamic profile of mental functioning than a single number where "more is better".

Where the concept came from

In 1905 the French psychologist Alfred Binet proposed the Binet–Simon scale and the idea of mental age: a child who solves tasks like an average eight-year-old has a mental age of 8 years. Later IQ was derived from the ratio of mental to chronological age. Binet himself stressed that this measure is not fixed forever.

Why it is outdated for adults

For adults the classic mental age lost its meaning: intellectual development plateaus, and dividing "mental age" by "chronological age" becomes incorrect. As early as 1926 L. L. Thurstone called the concept untenable; modern tests use the deviation IQ.

Mental age as a dynamic profile

In the context of longevity it is more accurate to speak not of a "level of intelligence" but of a profile: mood, stress, emotional maturity, cognitive flexibility. Such an age is fluid — it changes under the influence of sleep, workload and chronic stress. So "higher" does not equal "better": the goal is harmony, not a record.

How it differs from other "ages"

Mental age should not be confused with cognitive age (the speed and accuracy of thinking) or with emotional maturity. All of them complement chronological age but measure different facets of the psyche.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have a "mental age above your own"?

In the historical sense — yes, if you solve tasks the way older people do. But in adults this is not a marker of "better": flexibility, emotional stability and how well the psyche fits life's tasks matter more than an absolute number.

How does mental age differ from IQ?

IQ is a standardized score relative to peers. Mental age is a historical "raw" quantity from which IQ used to be derived; today, for adults, it is used more as an illustrative dynamic profile than a precise measure.
