Emotional maturity

The ability to be aware of and regulate feelings, and empathy

A sprout on balancing stones as a metaphor for emotional maturity

Emotional maturity is a level of psychological development at which a person is aware of their feelings, manages them and takes responsibility for their own reactions. It rests on well-developed emotional regulation and empathy, but is not reducible to them.

The key idea: maturity is not defined by your calendar age. Psychological maturation is a lifelong process, not a threshold automatically crossed at 18.

What it is

Psychological maturity is defined as a level of mental functioning after reaching which further growth with age almost ceases. It is not a separate trait but the integration of thinking, emotions and behavior into a whole, stable personality.

Emotional maturity is the emotional facet of this process: the ability to meet strong feelings without being destroyed by them and without destroying relationships.

Signs of emotional maturity

Typical markers include: awareness of one's own emotions, the ability to tolerate discomfort without impulsive reactions, responsibility for one's words and deeds, resilience to setbacks and the capacity for empathy — taking others' feelings into account.

A mature person less often resorts to suppressing emotions and more often to reappraising them, which is associated with better psychological well-being.

Age does not equal maturity

The prefrontal cortex — the region of planning, judgment and self-control — matures only by 25–30 years, so impulsivity in youth is partly biological. But even in adulthood maturity remains context-dependent: a person can be mature at work and immature in close relationships.

That is why emotional age is not measured by your passport — see mental age.

Maturity, stress and longevity

With age, emotion-regulation skills on average grow: older people return to calm faster and hold on to a positive mood longer. This buffers chronic stress, and thus reduces the load on the heart, vessels and immune system.

Personality traits matter too: see the Big Five, where conscientiousness and low neuroticism are linked to more robust health.

Frequently asked questions

Can emotional maturity be developed in adulthood?

Yes. Maturity is not a fixed given but a skill. Mindfulness practices, work with a psychologist and training in reappraising situations raise the ability to manage emotions at any age.

Are emotional maturity and emotional intelligence the same thing?

They overlap but are not identical. Emotional intelligence is a set of abilities to recognize and use emotions, while maturity is the stable outcome of personality development, additionally including responsibility and resilience.
