Chronic stress is the physiological and psychological response to a prolonged or constantly recurring stressor. Unlike acute stress (a one-off reaction to a threat), it keeps the body mobilized for months, and a response that is useful in the short term becomes harmful.
The HPA axis and cortisol
Stress activates the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, which releases cortisol. Cortisol raises glucose, providing energy for the "fight or flight" response. But with constant activation the hormones stay chronically high, triggering a cascade of damage.
Allostatic load
McEwen and Stellar introduced the concept of allostatic load — the accumulated "wear and tear" on the body from constant strain. The stress-response system is designed for short episodes; running continuously, it overloads organs and damages tissues.
What suffers in the body
Heart and vessels: persistently raised blood pressure and heart rate, inflammation in the arteries, a risk of hypertension, heart attack and stroke. Immunity: chronic inflammation, reduced resistance to infection. Brain: the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex shrink while the amygdala grows — memory and emotional regulation suffer.
Stress and accelerated aging
Chronic stress is linked to accelerated shortening of telomeres and to cellular senescence, which raises the risk of age-related diseases and mortality. Managing stress is an underrated but real longevity strategy.

How does chronic stress differ from acute stress?
Acute stress is a short mobilization in response to a specific threat; it is adaptive and passes quickly. Chronic stress is a prolonged or constantly recurring activation, in which the same mechanism starts to damage the heart, brain and immune system.
Can the harm from chronic stress be reversed?
Much of it is reversible: regular sleep, physical activity, social support, psychotherapy and mindfulness practices lower HPA-axis activity and cortisol levels. Some brain changes gradually recover once the load falls.
