Executive functions are a set of higher-order processes that manage thoughts and actions toward a goal: they help you plan, restrain impulses and switch between tasks. They are often compared to the brain's "conductor", coordinating the other abilities.
The three cores
Three basic components are distinguished. Inhibitory control — the ability to suppress an automatic response and not get distracted. Working memory — holding and processing information "in the mind". Cognitive flexibility — switching between tasks and rules. Planning, reasoning and problem-solving are built on top of them.
Where in the brain
A key role is played by the prefrontal cortex, but executive functions rely on distributed networks rather than a single region. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex handles working memory and planning, the anterior cingulate cortex handles error detection, and the orbitofrontal cortex handles impulse control. These functions mature slowly and reach their peak at around 20–29 years.
Development and aging
Executive functions appear in the first year of life, strengthen by age 12 and peak in young adulthood. With age they gradually weaken — largely because of a decline in processing speed and the vulnerability of the frontal lobes, though flexibility often holds up until about 70.
