Lean muscle mass ("dry" mass) is a common fitness term for body mass without fat. Strictly speaking, it is close to lean body mass: everything that is not fat — muscle, bone, organs, water.
Often "lean muscle mass" specifically means muscle — above all skeletal muscle mass. Preserving it is one of the main tasks of healthy aging: muscle supports metabolism and strength and protects against sarcopenia.
Lean, fat-free and muscle mass: the difference
The terms are often mixed up. Lean (fat-free) mass is all body weight minus fat: muscle, bone, organs, water. Skeletal muscle mass is only the muscle we move with; it is a part of the lean mass.
"Lean muscle mass" in everyday speech usually means muscle without excess fat and water — that is, an emphasis on the quality of the muscle tissue. Weight can be broken down into these components precisely only with instruments, not with scales.
Why it is important to preserve it
Muscle is not only strength. It takes glucose from the blood, supports metabolism at rest and serves as a protein "reserve" in case of illness. With age muscle mass naturally declines, and without exercise this process speeds up.
So the goal of healthy weight loss is to lose fat while preserving lean mass. Strength training and adequate protein intake help; it is easier to track the trend by body composition than by total weight.
