Epigenetics is the science of how the activity of genes is switched on and off without changing the DNA sequence itself. Genes are the “text,” and epigenetics is the “notes in the margins” that decide which paragraphs to read.
The main point for us: these notes are influenced by lifestyle and environment — nutrition, activity, stress, sleep, toxins. This explains why, with identical genes, people age differently. The key mechanism is DNA methylation.
Epigenetics and aging
Changes in epigenetic marks with age are one of the recognized hallmarks of aging. Over time genes begin to work “out of tune”: the needed ones quiet down, the unneeded ones activate. Epigenetic clocks of biological age are built on these changes.
Importantly, some of these changes are potentially reversible — which is exactly why epigenetics gives a scientific basis to the idea that lifestyle really affects the rate of aging.
What is in our power
We do not change our genes, but we influence how they work. Toward a “healthy” epigenetic profile the balance is shifted by: a balanced diet, regular physical activity, good sleep, stress management, quitting smoking. All of this is associated with slower epigenetic aging.
Be careful with promises of “epigenetic reprogramming” and supplements: a full reversal of aging through epigenetics is not yet proven in humans and remains a field of research.
