Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is all the calories the body spends over a day. TDEE is made up of the basal metabolic rate, the thermic effect of food and the energy for movement. It is TDEE that determines whether you lose weight, gain it or hold it steady.

The simplest way to calculate TDEE is as the basal metabolic rate multiplied by a physical activity factor. This is the key figure for planning nutrition and assessing metabolism.

What TDEE is made of

TDEE consists of four parts: the basal metabolic rate (BMR) — about 60–70% of the spend; the thermic effect of food (TEF) — the energy for digestion, ~10%; the energy of planned workouts (EAT); and non-exercise activity (NEAT) — walking, everyday movements, maintaining posture. It is NEAT that varies most between people.

How it is calculated: BMR × activity factor

The formula: TDEE = BMR × PAL, where PAL (physical activity level) is a lifestyle factor. Guides: sedentary lifestyle — 1.4–1.69; moderate activity — 1.7–1.99; high — 2.0–2.4; very high (heavy labour, sport) — above 2.4. BMR itself is conveniently estimated by the Harris–Benedict equation.

TDEE, weight and longevity

A calorie deficit relative to TDEE leads to weight loss, a surplus to gain. But the figure is not all that matters: the share of energy spent on movement is linked to heart health, insulin sensitivity and the preservation of muscle. By raising everyday activity (NEAT), you can noticeably increase TDEE without grueling workouts and support your body composition.

How does TDEE differ from the basal metabolic rate?

The basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the spend only on sustaining life at complete rest. TDEE is larger: it adds to BMR the energy for digesting food and any physical activity. In a sedentary person TDEE is about 1.4–1.5 times BMR, in an active person — 1.7–2 times or more.

How accurate are online TDEE calculations?

It is an estimate with an error of about 10–20%. The formulas predict BMR fairly well, but everyone chooses the activity factor subjectively. It is more accurate to rely on practice: if your weight is stable, your current calorie intake roughly equals your real TDEE.
