From symptoms and habits — to a risk level

The test draws on typical signs of a calcium shortfall, dietary patterns and proven risk factors (age, hormonal status, diseases and medications that affect calcium and bone density). Each answer is converted into points, and the total is matched against thresholds to give a risk level and a set of recommendations.

Why the body needs calcium

About 99% of calcium is stored in bones and teeth, but the remaining 1% is vital: it enables nerve conduction, muscle contraction (including the heart) and blood clotting. When blood calcium runs low, the body draws it from the bones — which is why chronic deficiency quietly leads to osteopenia and osteoporosis.

Calcium is only absorbed with enough vitamin D, and is held in the bones thanks to weight-bearing exercise (walking, running, strength training). Excess calcium from supplements without a doctor's supervision is also harmful — balance matters more than "the more the better".

When to see a doctor

Seek prompt medical advice for severe cramps and spasms, persistent numbness and tingling, heart rhythm disturbances, frequent fractures from minor trauma or an established diagnosis of osteoporosis. A doctor will order blood tests (calcium, vitamin D, PTH) and, if needed, a DEXA densitometry scan.
